Hiking the Cinque Terre Trails: A Complete Coastal Adventure Guide

Perched on sheer cliffs above the Ligurian Sea, the five villages of Cinque Terre — Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore — are connected by a network of ancient footpaths that rank among the most scenic hikes in all of Europe. This isn’t just a walk. It’s a full sensory immersion: wild rosemary, crashing waves, terracotta rooftops, and the smell of focaccia drifting from bakeries perched impossibly above the sea.

This guide gives you everything you need to do it right.

🗺️ Understanding the Trail Network

Cinque Terre’s trails are managed by the Cinque Terre National Park and vary significantly in difficulty and accessibility. The main routes:

  • SVA (Alta Via delle Cinque Terre): The high ridge trail — spectacular panoramas, fewer crowds, more demanding. Full traverse: ~38 km.
  • Trail #2 (the classic coastal path): The iconic low-level route connecting all five villages. Not all sections are open year-round — always check the National Park website before you go.
  • Sentiero Azzurro (Blue Trail): The most famous section. Currently (as of April 2026), the Vernazza–Corniglia and Manarola–Riomaggiore segments are open. The Via dell’Amore (Riomaggiore to Manarola) — recently restored — is a stunning and accessible 1.2 km walk.

Insider Tip: Trail conditions change seasonally due to erosion and landslides. Check parconazionale5terre.it the week of your visit.

🎫 Permits, Passes & Entry Fees

To hike the main trails, you need a Cinque Terre Trekking Card:

  • 1-day card: €10–€12 (includes trail access and unlimited train rides between villages)
  • 2-day card: €19–€23

Purchase at any of the five train stations or online. The card also contributes to trail maintenance — a good cause given how hard these paths work.

What to Avoid: Do not hike closed trails. Rangers do patrol and fines are issued. Beyond the fine, trail closures exist for real safety reasons — rockfalls are genuine hazards.

🥾 The Best Day Hike: Monterosso to Vernazza

If you only do one section, make it Monterosso al Mare → Vernazza (Trail #2, ~3.8 km, 2–2.5 hours). This is the most dramatic stretch of the coastal path:

  • Elevation gain: ~220 meters
  • Difficulty: Moderate — stone steps, some exposed sections, uneven terrain
  • Best time to start: 8–9 AM to beat the crowds and midday heat
  • What you’ll see: Terraced vineyards carved into cliffsides, the open sea stretching to the horizon, Vernazza’s famous harbor slowly revealed as you descend

Arrive in Vernazza for a late morning espresso at Il Pirata delle Cinque Terre and an acciughe (anchovy) bruschetta — the anchovies here are world-famous, packed in local salt.

🏔️ The Alta Via: For Serious Hikers

The high ridge trail (SVA) rewards those who seek solitude and elevation. You’ll trade sea-level views for sweeping panoramas across the entire Ligurian coastline and on clear days, as far as Corsica.

  • Full traverse: 38 km, best done over 2 days with an overnight in Vernazza or Corniglia
  • Difficulty: Strenuous — rocky terrain, significant elevation changes
  • What to bring: 2+ liters of water (no reliable sources en route), trail snacks, trekking poles, sun protection
  • Best months: April–June and September–October (avoid July–August heat)

Insider Tip: The ridge trail is almost entirely free of the tourist crowds that pack the coastal path. On a Tuesday morning in May, you may share it with nothing but lizards and wildflowers.

🍋 Eat & Drink Along the Way

Fueling a Cinque Terre hike is one of life’s great pleasures. Key stops:

Vernazza

  • Gambero Rosso — fresh grilled fish and local white wine (Sciacchetrà) with a harbor view. Dinner for two: €60–€90.
  • Gelateria Vernazza — pistachio gelato. Non-negotiable.

Manarola

  • Nessun Dorma — a clifftop bar with a view that will stop your heart. Go at sunset. Aperol spritz: €8. Worth every cent.

Monterosso

  • Il Frantoio — focaccia made with local olive oil. Get there early; it sells out by 10 AM. A slab costs €2–€3.
  • Pesto: Ligurian pesto — made with small-leaf Genoese basil, pine nuts, and aged Parmigiano — is the regional specialty. Pick up a jar from any alimentari to bring home.

🏨 Where to Stay

  • Budget: Ostello Bello Cinque Terre (La Spezia) — dorms from €35/night; easy train access to all villages
  • Mid-range: Guesthouses in Manarola or Corniglia — quieter, more local feel. €90–€150/night.
  • Splurge: Hotel Porto Roca (Monterosso) — cliff-hanging views and a pool. From €250/night.

Insider Tip: Book accommodation at least 3 months in advance for May–September. Cinque Terre is one of Italy’s most visited areas and fills up fast.

📅 When to Go

SeasonProsCons
April–MayWildflowers, mild temps, fewer crowdsSome trails may still be wet
JuneBest weather, trails openCrowds building
July–AugustPeak seasonVery crowded, very hot, expensive
September–OctoberHarvest season, golden lightSome rain possible
November–MarchPeaceful, cheapMany restaurants closed, trail closures

Our recommendation: Late April or early October. You get the light, the warmth, the open trails — and you can actually find a seat at Nessun Dorma.

🎒 What to Pack

  • Trail runners or light hiking boots (no flip-flops — the steps are real)
  • Sun hat and sunscreen
  • Lightweight layers (sea breeze can be cool at altitude)
  • Reusable water bottle — refill stations in each village
  • Cash — many small vendors don’t take cards
  • A sense of wonder — it helps

Cinque Terre is one of those rare places that looks exactly like its photographs and somehow still manages to exceed them. Walk it slowly. Stop often. Let the view earn its moment.
